He stopped her on a Thursday, and it took eleven minutes, and it was the easiest thing he ever did, and he was sick afterward in the alley.
The aldermen were meeting on the fourth of March. She had it worked out: a hundred and forty men who had said yes, a letter from a minister on Lexington, and Ellis drafting a statement in the register in a beautiful copperplate hand.
And she came up to Kirk in the kitchen with the whole of it on her face and said:
"I want you to come."
"To the aldermen."
"You're the only one of them who doesn't look like he's asking for anything." She was almost laughing. "Jim, you stand like a man who owns a building. I have watched you carry soup for three months and never once been able to make it look like you were carrying soup. If you walk in there behind me, they will look at you and think, that man is somebody. And then they will look at the rest of us."
He put down the pot.
He had known this was coming since Tuesday. He had lain awake two nights building it, in the dark, the way he had once built a firing solution, and he had it ready, and he was going to use it, and he already knew exactly how it would work.
"When?" he said.
"The fourth."
"Which chamber?"
She stopped. "I don't know which chamber."
"You'll want to find out. And how they seat the public gallery, and whether they can close it. Because if they can close it, Edith, then you are going to walk a hundred and forty starving men across this city in March, in the cold, in their own coats, and stand them on the steps of City Hall while eleven men in a warm room vote not to let them in.
"And then it's in the papers. Not the way you want. Not, two hundred men who have not eaten went to City Hall. It will say, mob at City Hall. Somebody will write that phrase, and everybody will remember the last time they read it.
"And then Tammany looks at you. Not the way you want. They will look at you the way a man looks at something that has come into his kitchen. Because you will have taken a hundred and forty men out of a soup line and put them on a set of steps, and a woman who can do that is not running a mission anymore. She's an organizer. And there is a short word they use for organizers in this city, in the newspapers, and once it is on you it does not come off."
Edith Keeler stood in the middle of her own kitchen with her arms at her sides.
"They would not," she said.
"They would."
"On what evidence."
"On the evidence that you are a woman with no husband, no money, and no church behind you, feeding two hundred men in a cellar and telling them the world is going to change."
The boiler ticked.
"And the mission closes," he said. "That's how it ends. Not with a fight. Somebody makes a call about the fire code, and there's a man at the door on Monday with a piece of paper, and it's all perfectly legal, and Dutch Vandermeer does not eat. For a subway to Queens."
He picked the pot back up, because his hands had begun to shake and he needed them doing something.
"You'll spend the only thing you have on eleven men who have already decided, and lose the room on Twenty-first Street to buy a conversation you are not going to win. That's the arithmetic. I'm sorry. But that is the arithmetic."

It took eleven minutes.
He watched her take it in, and turn it over, and test it, and look for the hole, and not find one, because there was not one, because every word of it was true.
That was the thing he had understood, lying awake in the dark: he did not have to lie to her. He never had to lie to her. The world was full of perfectly true reasons not to do the right thing, hundreds of them, lying about on the ground waiting to be picked up, and all he had to do was pick one up and hand it to her, and she would do the rest herself, because she was honest, and an honest person cannot ignore a true objection.
That was the weapon. It worked for forty years.
"You're right," Edith said.
"Edith."
"No, you're right. That's what's so awful about it. You are right, and I have been thinking about that room for three weeks like a girl thinking about a dance." She sat down. "God. Ellis has written half a page."
"I'll tell him."
"You will not tell him. I will tell him." She put her hands flat on the wood, then looked up, and her eyes were bright and furious and entirely dry. "But I will tell you something, Jim Kirk, and I want you to hear it, because I am going to be sensible for the rest of the afternoon and I would like four seconds of not being sensible first.
"They are going to build that subway. And it will cost sixty million dollars. And every man in that cellar will be dead of nothing at all, in a doorway, in about six years, and there will be a train.
"And I was going to say so. In a room. Out loud. To their faces. Once."
She went out to find Ellis.

Kirk stood in the kitchen for perhaps four seconds. Then he went out through the back into the alley and was sick into the ash can, quietly, thoroughly, for some time.
Afterward he wiped his mouth and looked up at a rectangle of gray sky between two buildings.
"That's one," he said, to nobody.
